Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral with long, thin fibrous crystals. The mineral was widely used in a large number of applications, particularly as a flame retardant or insulating material. Asbestos has also been found in many products around the home or office, including clapboard, roofing shingles, attic insulation (vermiculite), exterior siding, pipe and boiler covering, cement, caulking, roof patching material, furnace cement, driveway coatings, wallboard, textured and latex paints, acoustical ceiling tiles, wall plaster, vinyl floor tiles, appliance wiring, hair dryers, irons and ironing board pads.

In general, the use of asbestos has been discontinued due to the adverse health effects from inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos is considered a designated material under the Controlled Products Regulations and is a known carcinogen. Chronic exposure to asbestos can lead to asbestosis and mesothelioma (a type of lung cancer), amongst others.

According to Part 36, section 36.5(1) (b) of the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Regulation 217/2006, the occupational exposure limit of a designated material must be as close to zero as is reasonably practicable, but shall not exceed the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). The Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Division recognizes the level as close to zero as is reasonably practicable for all forms of asbestos as 0.1 fibres per cubic centimeter of air (f/cc or f/cm3), which matches the TLV established by ACGIH.

Creation of an inventory of asbestos-containing materials

YouTube Preview Image

If you are unsure which materials in a property contain asbestos, then one of the first tasks would be to prepare an asbestos inventory. According to law, employers are responsible for ensuring that asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are identified. Part 37.1 of the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation states that any material suspected of containing asbestos is considered to contain asbestos until it is proven to be asbestos-free. This involves a thorough inspection of the entire building (commercial/industrial) for any items which could potentially contain asbestos. Bulk samples of suspected materials are taken and analyzed for asbestos type and content. Asbestos-Containing Materials are identified and their current condition is evaluated. If the materials are in good condition, a control program can be implemented. If materials are heavily damaged or in poor condition, or if asbestos fibers are detected in the air, then an abatement project may be necessary.

Bulk samples to identify asbestos-containing materials

Workplaces are required to know all asbestos-containing materials in the workplace. If it is suspected that asbestos-containing materials (ACM) may be present, then bulk sampling to determine asbestos content would be warranted, especially prior to any type of significant construction work or renovations that may disturb the material.

Asbestos Abatement Projects

Oil leaking container ship might cause environmental catastrophe

Sunday, January 21, 2007

In the United Kingdom, an anti-pollution operation is under way after the stricken ship MSC Napoli started to leak dangerous heavy fuel oil.

The heavy fuel oil that is leaking from the beached Italian ship is extremely dangerous for the environment. Fear of pollution increased after the ship was further damaged during storms last Thursday. MSC Napoli was beached by Devon coastguards after it suffered heavy structual damage in the gale force storms of Thursday, 18 January 2007, that wreaked havoc across Northern Europe. The ship, which contains 160 containers of hazardous chemical substances, is listing at 35 degrees.

The entire 26-man crew was rescued by navy helicopters Thursday after severe gales. Cracks were found on both sides of the ship, but the current oil leak was not expected.

Around 2,400 containers were carried by the 62,000 tonne ship, some of which contain potentially dangerous hazardous chemicals.

The Coastguards have reported that up to 200 of the containers carrying materials such as perfume and battery acid are loose from the ship and they are looking for missing containers. South African stainless steel producer Columbus Stainless confirmed on Friday that there was at least 1,000 tonnes of nickel on board MSC Napoli.

A hole in the ship flooded the engine room and there’s now fears that the ship will break up. Saturday MSC Napoli was towed to Portland when a ”structural failure” forced the salvage team to beach it. As the storms have continued MSC Napoli has been further damaged.

The authorities have warned people about the pollution, which already has reached the beaches at Devon, but many want to see it on their own. Police have closed Branscombe Beach as more than 20 containers have broken up scattering their contents along the beach.

Sky News reported Sunday that the costs of the accident might be very high as thousands of pounds worth of BMW motorbikes, car parts, empty oak barrels and perfume might get lost in flooding containers.

Earthquake, tsunami combo caused devastation in Pichilemu, Chile

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Pichilemu, Chile – Last Saturday, Chile was hit by a 8.8 earthquake. Many coastal towns were also hit by a tsunami, and Pichilemu was one of them. Its inhabitants were surprised by the giant waves that destroyed the most of the costanera and that reached the city square.

Pichilemu, that means in Mapudungun language small forest, is one of the most famous Chilean resort towns in the central zone of Chile. It is recurrently visited by surfers from all the world, because the Punta de Lobos beach is considered one of the best for surf practice worldwide.

Central Pichilemu was not severely damaged by the earthquake, but the tsunami caused significant destruction. The Fishermen Creek, located in front of the beach, was completely destroyed, and its machines are now unusable. Most of the Agustín Ross architecture that characterized the city, three of them being National Monuments of Chile, were damaged. The Agustín Ross Mirador, a famous location in front of the beach, located less than 200 meters from the Fisherman Creek, was completely destroyed. Its famous balustrades were washed away or thrown asunder. Many restaurants, kiosks and a circus were affected by the tsunami.

The rural parts of Pichilemu, like Ciruelos, Rodeillo and Espinillo feature houses constructed from adobe. Many were more than 100-years old, and were destroyed or are now uninhabitable.

The most powerful aftershock was produced almost 40 kilometers in front of the coast of Pichilemu, at the 03:10 local time (07:10 UTC) in March 2, with an intensity of 5.5 in the Richter scale, according to the USGS.

The Intendant of the O’Higgins Region, Juan Núñez, had a meeting with the Governor of the Cardenal Caro Province, Loreto Puebla, the Mayor of Pichilemu, Roberto Córdova, and naval and military authorities, juntas de vecinos representatives. They decided to leave the Carabineros police force to maintain the security of the city.

Harvesting Rainwater And Its Benefits}

Harvesting Rainwater And Its Benefits

by

Tal Potishman

The UK offers many privileges to its inhabitants, one of them being having easy access to water. Therefore it will be a shock to many to hear that certain parts of England are suffering from water shortages. We are not so invincible after all. It is very easy to take our water for granted.

Rainwater harvesting is collecting rain water that would otherwise go down the gutter. If everyone started harvesting rainwater they will be surprised to learn how much water we will be saving. Rainwater harvesting is a practice that has been around for centuries and is still used around the world. Household-owners are mostly unaware of the advantages associated with rainwater harvesting. For instance if we find ways to preserve rainwater, our water bills will be cut dramatically.

Using the water butt as a means of collecting rainwater

A largely popular method of collecting rainwater is to place a water butt on your down-pipe. Using a water butt is a popular method of harvesting rainwater as it is cost-effective and easy to use. The rainwater can be used for gardening purposes and even car washing. In addition, if you wish, you can fit two water butts next to each other from the same downpipe if you have a big garden.

YouTube Preview Image

If a water butt alone proves to be unsatisfactory, you can always upgrade to a rainwater harvesting pump and filter. This pump is beneficial as it creates a pressurised system that can then be used in conjunction with a hosepipe. It can be useful for watering your garden or washing the car using a hosepipe.

How can I use the rainwater?

The rainwater can be used for a wide variety of outdoor purposes such as watering the garden, or cleaning windows. If the end result is the same then why not use rainwater instead of mains water? Rainwater harvesting has other benefits too. For instance, the rainwater encourages less build-up of calcium deposits in appliances.

The use of rainwater around the house

Once the rainwater is filtered, it can even be used around the house to supply toilets or washing machines. However, it is important for the rainwater to be filtered and siphoned in order to make it suitable as a source of non-drinking water.

In deciding which tank to install next to your house, you should think about a few things. The type of area you live in, the number of people that are living with you, and the amount of water that will be used all play a big part. The procedure is then as follows; once the correct tank has been installed the rainwater is then filtered and pumped into a header tank in the loft of your home where it is distributed into a household and non-drinking supply. Do not be surprised to learn that some modifications will need to be done to your existing plumbing. This is essential so that the rainwater supply will be separate from your fresh water supply.

Some final thoughts

With water rates continuing to be on the rise, it seems that more people are considering the rainwater harvesting option. If more of us realised that we do not need to use water from the mains supply for many of the domestic chores, we would save a lot of water. There are many long-term benefits of rainwater harvesting, therefore it is an option that should not be lightly dismissed.

Researchers: Wild gorillas seen using tools

Saturday, October 1, 2005

Wild gorillas were seen using tools, researchers for the U.S. based Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said.

Images show one female gorilla apparently using sticks to test the depth of water, another female made a bridge with a stump detached from a bush to help her cross muddy ground, and a female using a stump from a bush as support as she dug for herbs.

Thomas Breuer, of the WCS operating in the Republic of the Congo, called the discovery “truly astounding” and added that it was “quite surprising to me and my team to make this observation”. Only wild chimps, orangutans, and captive gorillas were previously known to use tools, meaning that now all of the four great apes were oberserved using tools, suggesting that the usage of tools might predate the evolution of modern humans.

But, tool usage seems to be infrequent among wild gorillas. They were observed for some ten years in the Mbeli Bai area before this discovery was made.

Nevertheless, Breuer is fascinated by what he calls a “similarity” between humans and gorillas: “If you or me want to cross a swamp, we use the same solutions as gorillas.”

Gorillas are an endangered species; they appear on the Red List of IUCN.

How Online Fax Can Simplify Your Workplace}

Submitted by: Titus Hoskins

One of the main underlying reasons why online fax has become so popular with business owners has to do with simplicity. Using an email or web based fax service is extremely simple, as easy as sending an email. And we all know how to do that in these days of the computer and the Internet.

Online fax is simply using your computer and your email program to send and receive all your faxes. Once you sign up for a fax service, you can send your faxes directly through your email system. You’re given a local or toll-free fax number and your messages can be send to another email account or to a fax machine via the fax number; the difference is that you don’t really need a traditional fax machine or even a dedicated fax phone line. Your online fax service provider acts as an intermediary to handle and direct all your messages.

Online fax is actually a simple form of “cloud computing” where your faxing is outsourced to a third party. For a small monthly fee this provider handles all your messages which can also be stored in your online account for easy retrieval anywhere you have web access. All this offers great convenience and really does simplify all your faxing. It also means your business can be open and reachable around the clock, 365 days of the year.

Keep in mind, when you use this new modern way of faxing, your messages are in a digital form and can be easily stored on your computer or in your online account. All your messages can be neatly filed and ready for access whenever you should need them, regardless of when you received your message. This also means much less clutter in the workplace because this is “paperless” faxing.

This also means you won’t have to buy all those messy inks and toners each month. This will not only save on costs but it also eliminates the need for all those supplies, including the conventional fax machine. You can consolidate all your messages with your computers and other data, another great convenience.

Actually, many business owners go one step further and acquire a virtual PBX system which can handle all their messages, voice mail and you can even have a virtual receptionist. This is a great way to have all your workplace communications consolidated into one system, including all your fax messages.

All these services for the most part, are completely scalable for businesses. If you should need more fax lines, you can easily get them without having to install any additional hardware. In these uncertain times, the ability to quickly scale up or down your communications can really simplify your operations and make them more manageable.

However, in the end, despite all these advantages such as portability, accessibility and scalability; what most users come back to is how easy online fax is to use. You can simply send an email or log into your online account and click a few buttons and you’re done. This ease of use truly makes online fax an inexpensive way to simplify both your communications and your workplace.
